WELCOME to Ethnic and Experimental DANCE!!

Hello! My name is Ruric-Amari and I have been performing and teaching dance for more than 8 years. Starting out as your average American girl from your average home, I did not become seriously interested in dance until late in Highschool. The thing is, being a dancer can be intimidating, but the truth is you don’t have to prove anything to anyone but yourself. Enjoy dance as a way of life to feel better!

BYOB:

Bring Your Own Body.

It takes time for you body to adjust to new movement. Give yourself the first few classes to wear something comfortable and experience dance for dance sake. This includes any kind of active gear, sweatpants, long socks, leggings, or eitherwise anything you can move in.

 Practice at Home:

Start small to build big.

It takes time to build a healthy practice and you want dance to be with you forever. Think of it as a dear friend that needs love and attention but also space to keep you from BURN OUT. Very important that you go somewhat slowly and do not burn yourself out.

  1. Start adding practice to your everyday. Shimmy when walking to the bathroom, headslides when washing dishes, or stretching in front of the TV. Maybe try changing little habits here in there to help condition you like sitting up straight during the ride to work, using the stairs, or trying out a new rice and vegetable recipe.
  2. Make yourself a corner for dance. Clear out a space, something 100-300 sq ft and prop up/hang mirrors to your liking. I recommend buying a set of sliding glass doors from Home Depot or Lowes. Very cheap and big. Trying painting the walls or hanging pictures…make it your space. Make sure to keep all your projects close at hand like zills, drum, yoga mat, etc…
  3. Start using your space and slowly increase the frequency. Adjust depending on life needs. Start using your space 10-15 minutes a day 3-5 days a week and work towards a regular 30 minute daily practice. If you decide to become a true professional, you will be looking at 2-6 hours of daily practice and a lot of desk work for theme, choreographies, dancer corrdination, and gig leg work.

 Dance tips:

*Dance in your head when listening to music.

*Listen to your dance music during all car rides.

*Zills are hard. Practice lots.

*Tell yourself nice things about your dance. Everyone offers something unique, bashing yourself for it does not help anyone.
