It was 4:00 pm on Friday, June 1, 1946 and I was playing softball in the empty lot by Ave. S. She was walking to her friend George’s house. I looked at her and said,That is what I want for Christmas. Bet was wearing a skirt and blouse that day and her hair was shoulder length. I let her go by then, but, I did walk her home that night. At the time I saw Bet, she had a crush on Sal Slapacouf. He was about 5’ 8 and a little pudgy. Sal’s parents owned the Kosher Meat Market on Ave. S. I don’t think she ever did any thing about it but she did have that crush. There were others vying for her affections also, but I won out in the long run. It took me a couple of years, but I eventually got Bet for Christmas. That first year she was in Albany, GA with her aunt. The next Christmas she was really ticked off at me. But the Christmas of 1950, she was mine. |
